One of the things I want to get better at is communicating what bugs we are working with D2L on fixing. So, once a month, I’ll update you on a couple of the higher profile bugs we are working.
This one has been going for a long time, but doesn’t want to go away. When opening a file from MS Office or major word processors, D2L converts it to display in the browser. They have two different converters. We will continue to work with D2L until these number reach reasonable levels.
View as Page
This conversion happens upon upload. The tool converts the file to .pdf which displays nicely, but does not do the best with screen readers. The error rate is running right now at less than 1%, so it’s the recommended setting for document conversion.
View as Text
This conversion happens when a user opens the file. The tool converts the file to .html which doesn’t display as nicely, but works better with screen readers. Unfortunately, because of the timing of the conversion and the fact HTML presents more challenges, the error rate is much higher. This week, it’s at 2.1% and seem to come in groups. Our recommendation is, unless you absolutely need the HTML format, avoid this setting.
Third Option: Download
If all else fails, download the document. It takes much longer, but at least you’ll know you are getting the file in its native format.
Custom Banner Images Display Gray
Ever loaded an image to a course and it’s grayed out? We have discovered it’s related to how the user is logging into D2L. If they login through the portal or ppcc.desire2learn.com, the header image will be grayed out. If it’s through online.ppcc.edu, it displays just fine.
D2L is saying the behavior is expected, but I’m pushing to get them to fix it. In the meantime, the only workaround is to load an image from their library.
