Updating Courses

When does the process of updating courses begin?  A perspective I hadn’t considered is, it should begin with data collection during course delivery.  It makes sense, but it’s sometimes hard.  As you are teaching, collect information about where the students are struggling, when they are bored and areas where you’d like to see the design improve.  That way, when you get to the end of the semester, you’ll have a pretty good idea where to start.

OER Changing Course Design

OER is the hot buzzword of the moment.  It’s not going away, but often new and exciting things overshadow the actual experience of students.  If a textbook is removed from a course, it leaves a big hole and it’s not just the content that needs to be replaced.  Students are expecting a book or book-like experience.  How we change the design to accommodate this is as important as how we accommodate for the missing materials.

Red Rocks gave a great presentation about learning aids.  While that’s not something I want to go into here, with the coming Email changes, their Outlook Cheat Sheet looks like it could be very helpful.
